MacConnell

The ancestral home of the MacConnell family is the Hebrides.  Their name comes from the Gaelic Mac-Dhomhnaill, ‘son of the mightiest one in the world’.  They are a sept of the Clan Donald.  Many spelling variations of MacConnell have been recorded including MacConnell, MacConnal, MacConnel, Connell and others.

Early English documents usually refer to the MacDonalds as MacConnells. McConnell is one of the more common of spelling variations of the original surname, which also include MacDonald, McDonald, McDaniel, and McDonnell and a huge number of variations of these names.  The tartan is based on MacDonald Hunting without the black; for use by the MacConnells in addition to the MacDonalds.
