It is believed that the Clan Forrester is of Celtic origin named after Marnin Forrester who held lands in Dunipace, Stirlingshire c.1200. Sir Adam Forrester is regarded the founder of the Clan. He was an ambassador, merchant, Provost of Edinburgh, Keeper of the Great Seal of Scotland and Deputy Chamberlain of Scotland in the fourteenth century. In 1376 he acquired the estate of Corstorphine in Midlothian.
During the Wars of Scottish Independence the Clan supported King Robert the Bruce of Scotland. Sir Adam's son, Sir John Forrester also became Keeper of the Great Seal of Scotland, Chamberlain of Scotland and Keeper of the Household to King Scotland. For the next two centuries the clan was supporters of the Scottish Crown and fought for it losing Sir John Forrester of Niddry at Flodden 1513 and the seventh chief was slain at Pinkie Cleugh 1547. The tenth chief Sir George was fined heavily by Oliver Cromwell and the estates became burdened with debts.
At the beginning of the 18th Century the Clan fought for the British Government during the War of the Spanish Succession. During the Jacobite Uprisings Clan Forrester supported the British Government. The Clan Forrester helped defeat the Jacobites at the Battle of Preston 1715.
The tartan was designed by Dr Gordon Teall of Teallach President of the Scottish Tartans Society in 1990 and accepted by the clan at the same date.
