Traquair

This name is derived from the lands of Traquair in the parish of the same name in Peebleshire.  The surname is apparently a rare one.  Magister Alan de Tracquare witnessed a gift of land in Berwick to the Hospital of Soltre around 1250-1270.  Thomas de Treuequer was decanus de Anegus in 1265.  Johannes de Traquair had a charter of lands of Edirdye and Henderstoun in the reign of Robert I.

Alexander Traquair, brother german of guondam Thomas Traquair, ypothecarius, was burgess of Edinburgh in 1618.  Dr. Ramsey Heatley Traquair (1840-1912) was a distinguished palaeontologist in Edinburgh.  There is not a Traquair tartan nor is the name claimed as a sept or dependent of any clan.  One recent publication has suggested the use of the Tweedside tartan owing to the Traquair association with this area.
