The original name in Scotland was Burnard found in Roxburghshire.  Roger Burnard granted lands to the monks of Melrose in 1200.  Their support for Robert the Bruce (r.1124-53) gained them more lands in Kincardineshire and the Forest of Drum.

From the 16th century the main residence of the Burnetts of Leys was Crathes Castle. The present Chief of the family is James C. A. Burnett of Leys. The tartan The tartan is recorded with the Lord Lyon.
