Robert de Brus followed William the Conqueror to Britian. One of his sons became Companion in Arms to Prince David who became David I of Scotland (r.1124-53).

The Buces became a powerful force in Scottish politcs. Through marriage they became possible contenders for the Scottish throne. Robert the Bruce acquired this having bloodily dispensed with the Comyns in 1307 confirming his position by winning the battle of Bannockburn (1314). The tartan was first illisitated in Sobieski brothers's, Vestiarium Scoticum 1842.
