Old French: Bisit Badge: Tree stump Latin Motto: Abscissa virescit (Hewn down yet still grows green) In the mid twelfth century the Birrell Clan obtained large estates in Inveness-shire. In 1245 Sir John Bisset of Lovat was imprisoned in the castle at Inveness in connection with the murder of the Earl of Athol and died in 1258.
Through one of his daughter's marriage, the lands of Lovat became the Fraser's and through a second daughter, who married Gregory de Grant, the clan Grant was estblished.The tartan was designed by Mrs E. Bisset in conjunction with the Scottish Tartans Society (1977).
