Barclay

Norman French: de Berchelai
Badge: Hand holding a dagger on a chapeau double ermine
Latin Motto: Aut agere aut mori (either do or die)
Barclay is a family or clan with Norman origins which commenced with Walter de Berkeley (1165) who became Chamberlain of Scotland.  The same Barklays are found in Gloucestershire.

In Scotland they settled in the Aberdeenshire area. There are two tartans: the 'hunting' version of green which first appeared in the Sobieski brothers' Vestiarium Scoticum 1842 and a yellow one known as the 'dress' version (W.& AK. Johnston Limited recorded in The Tartans of the Clans & Septs of Scotland 1906) which is just a colour change of the 'hunting' version.
