A tartan pattern is called a sett and the details can be explained by counting the threads of the yarn colours in a woven tartan fabric. If different colours are used for the same sett, it must be given a different name, or another word or words be added to the name. A distinctive feature of all the Kinloch Anderson tartans are the three parallel lines with the central line wider than the outer two.
The Kinloch Anderson Rowenberry tartan or ‘Rudha-an’ in Scottish Gaelic means ‘Red One’. Inevitably, this tartan is almost wholly red in a variety of shades and hues, with a golden yellow overcheck. The Rowenberry tree is famed for its hardiness and ability to survive in the mountains as well as its long and interesting history. In Celtic mythology it’s known as the ‘Tree of Life’ and symbolises courage, wisdom and protection. In Scotland the Rowan Tree’s berries are red whereas in Asia there are some species where they are a golden yellow.
