V&A Dundee Tartan

V-and-A-Dundee

This tartan has been designed exclusively for V&A Dundee to be used as the museum’s tartan by Kinloch Anderson.

The design takes inspiration from the initial concept pencil sketches for the iconic V&A Dundee building by its architect, Kengo Kuma.

The pattern and tonal colour palette reference his pencil sketches of the building, with the addition of a shocking pink overcheck, to recognise Elsa Schiaparelli’s love of her time in Scotland.

The creation of this tartan also celebrates V&A Dundee’s 2023 Tartan Exhibition.

About the design for the V&A Dundee

The design process for the exclusive V&A Dundee tartan is a fascinating exploration of artistry and precision. Kinloch Anderson began with a deep dive into Kengo Kuma's initial architectural sketches, studying the lines and shapes to translate them into a unique tartan pattern.

Next, we explored a tonal colour palette that mirrors the architectural drawings, capturing their essence in thread. A dramatic twist is introduced with a shocking pink overcheck, a homage to Elsa Schiaparelli and her fondness for Scotland.

Each thread is carefully selected and meticulously woven, ensuring the tartan resonates with the architectural inspiration and story behind its creation.

How we make the tartan

Upon selecting the ideal colour palette, Kinloch Anderson commences the meticulous crafting of the tartan.

The loom is carefully set up with each individual thread painstakingly positioned, ensuring a perfect translation of the architectural sketch-inspired design.

During weaving, the shocking pink overcheck is expertly introduced, a vibrant disruption to the muted palette.

Each colour and line, mirroring Kengo Kuma's architectural vision, intersects with the others in a harmonious grid of patterns, revealing the tartan in its tangible form.

Lastly, the tartan is thoroughly inspected, ensuring that every detail impeccably reflects the narrative of V&A Dundee's iconic design and Elsa Schiaparelli’s vibrant influence.

The result is a testament to time-honoured techniques, contemporary design thinking, and the unique story behind its creation.
