Tailoring in Edinburgh: Celebrating 525 Years of Craftsmanship and Heritage

Last weekend marked a truly special occasion for Edinburgh’s tailoring community — The 525th anniversary of the Incorporation of Tailors in Edinburgh. The celebration took place at the New Club and brought together a wonderful group of tailors and craftspeople who continue to uphold the city’s proud tradition of fine tailoring.

Representing Kinloch Anderson were Douglas, Deirdre, John and Jo Kinloch Anderson, who joined esteemed Edinburgh tailoring friends and colleagues. Each share the same goal, to create exceptional, well-crafted clothing that stand the test of time.

The evening was especially meaningful for us, as Douglas Kinloch Anderson was one of the speakers at the dinner. His reflections on Edinburgh’s tailoring heritage, the enduring importance of craftsmanship, and the responsibility to maintain these traditions for future generations were warmly received by all in attendance.

A Heritage That Stands the Test of Time

The Incorporation of Tailors in Edinburgh has an extraordinary history. It was first mentioned in 1473 and granted its Seal of Cause in 1500. The Incorporation later received royal charters from James V in 1531 and James VI in 1594. For over five centuries, its members have represented the very best in the art of tailoring, craftsmanship and design.

During the celebration, guests had the opportunity to look through the Incorporation’s historic meeting book. Seeing the name Kinloch Anderson recorded in entries dating back to the early 1900s and beyond was a proud moment, reminding us of our deep and enduring connection to Edinburgh’s tailoring heritage, a story that continues to this day.

Quality Tailoring for a Sustainable Future

The values of quality, tradition and craftsmanship are as relevant today as ever. In an age dominated by fast fashion, there is a renewed appreciation for sustainable tailoring in Edinburgh — garments made to last, repair and rewear rather than replace.

Even high street retailers have reported a rise in suit sales, particularly among younger generations who recognise the value of well-made clothing and the importance of investing in quality.

At Kinloch Anderson, we take great pride in repairing and refurbishing garments, especially kilts that have been worn for decades or even centuries. Many of these treasured pieces are beautifully preserved and continue to be worn by new generations. Restoring such garments is not only satisfying but a celebration of our heritage.

Dressing Smart and Considered

Tailoring is not simply about how a garment looks, but about how it lasts. Fine tailoring embodies respect for materials, craftsmanship and the people who make your clothes. Choosing Scottish tailoring means supporting sustainable production and timeless design.

As we celebrate 525 years of tailoring in Edinburgh, we are reminded that the art of tailoring is about creating something meaningful — clothing that can be cherished, repaired and passed down.

Here’s to another 525 years of Scottish tailoring, tradition and craftsmanship.
