A Fond Farewell to John – Our Legendary Operations Manager Retires After 49 Years
20 May 2025

At Kinloch Anderson, today marks both a proud and emotional milestone. After 49 remarkable years in the Scottish textile industry, we bid a heartfelt farewell to our long-standing Operations Manager, John, as he begins his well-earned retirement.
John has been more than a manager—he has been the beating heart of our business and a true icon in the world of Scottish heritage clothing.
49 Years of Dedication to Kinloch Anderson
John joined Kinloch Anderson in 1976, beginning his journey in the production department with dreams of becoming a decorator. His very first task? Cutting cloth in the warehouse—a craft he mastered and continued to perfect over nearly five decades.
Throughout the years, John worked in almost every area of the business—from dispatch and retail to ultimately leading our production operations. In every role, he demonstrated exceptional commitment, attention to detail, and deep respect for Scottish craftsmanship.
The Oracle of Tartan: A True Tartan Expert
Despite being colourblind, John developed an extraordinary ability to identify and match tartan patterns with pinpoint accuracy. Affectionately known as “The Oracle”, he became a trusted authority on Scottish tartans and their history.
John's encyclopaedic knowledge has helped maintain the authenticity and precision of our most cherished products, including handmade kilts and traditional Highland Dress. His dedication has upheld the standards Kinloch Anderson is proud to be known for, both in the UK and internationally.
A Manager with Heart, Humour, and Humanity
John’s impact wasn’t limited to production expertise. He brought warmth, humour, and kindness into every workspace, making a difference in the lives of colleagues across generations.
Fran, our Production Supervisor, summed it up beautifully:
“Working with John has been a privilege. He’s made every day easier with his smile, his experience, and most of all, his gentle heart. I feel lucky to have had him as my ‘work husband’—he’s truly one of a kind.”
A Love Story Born in the Workplace
When asked to reflect on his proudest moment at Kinloch Anderson, John didn’t point to a title or achievement.
Instead, he said simply:
“Meeting my wife here.”
A touching reminder that Kinloch Anderson is more than a business—it’s a family.
Looking Ahead: Golf, Grandkids, and New Adventures
Although John is retiring, he’s not slowing down. He’s looking forward to playing more golf in Scotland’s beautiful countryside and spending cherished time with his granddaughter.
We’re sure he’ll bring the same joy and focus to retirement that he brought to every day at Kinloch Anderson.
Thank You, John – A Legacy That Lasts
To John: thank you for your loyalty, leadership, and legacy. You've been instrumental in shaping the quality, culture, and spirit of Kinloch Anderson in Edinburgh and beyond.
From all of us—past and present—we wish you a joyful, healthy, and adventure-filled retirement. You've truly earned it.
