California
The California tartan was created in 1998 and on 23rd July 2001 Governor Davis approved and signed Assembly Bill 614 that designated this design as the official California State Tartan. The similarity with the Muir/Moor tartan is intentional in recognition of John Muir, the naturalist and most revered Scot-American in Californian history whose efforts resulted in the creation the Yosemite National Park, the first in the United States, which was formally recognised by the US congress in 1864.
