Which weight of tartan should I choose?

Kinloch Anderson use tartan made from the finest worsted wool yarns for our Kilts, Tartan Trousers, Tartan Skirts and Accessories.

Choosing the most suitable weight is very important for the handle and drape of your garment and also how often and where you are going to where it.

Additionally there are thousands of tartan cloths to choose from and some colourways are only available in certain weights. There are three weights of cloth available:

Lightweight (8-12 oz) tartan cloth is suitable for Ladies Skirts, Mens and Ladies Tartan Trousers, young Children’s Kilts and accessories. This quality has a beautiful handle, soft finish and drapes well.

Mediumweight (13-15 oz) tartan cloth is the most popular weight for our Mens Kilts, Mens Tartan Trousers and is also suitable for most Ladies Skirts.

For Kilts to be worn for occasional use i.e. Weddings, Dinners, Special Events etc. this is the weight to choose. It makes a beautiful kilt when made up and retains the pleats perfectly.

It comes traditionally woven with a selvedge edge which becomes the bottom of the kilt as it is made with no hem.

Heavyweight (16-26 oz) tartan cloth is most suitable for Mens Kilts that are to be worn frequently and outdoors when warmth and durability are the prerequisites.

This cloth also makes a beautiful Kilt retaining the pleats perfectly. It comes traditionally woven with a selvedge edge which becomes the bottom of the kilt as it is made with no hem.
