About

The Romance of The Highlands

This is a strathspey in 4/4 time. The strathspey is a slow, graceful dance characterised by the use of a semiquaver (16th note) followed by a dotted quaver (8th note). This “Scotch Snap” rhythm is synonymous with Scottish music and only really appears in this tradition.

The Romance of the Highlands strathspey has been exclusively composed for Kinloch Anderson by Pipe Major Derek Potter RVM, The Sovereign’s Piper 2008-2012.

This strathspey is named after the Kinloch Anderson Romance tartan and evokes an artistic vision of The Highlands of Scotland with soft hues, gentle shades and a romantic notion of the advent of the fresh Spring season.  The tartan itself introduces unusual pastel shades and has become a favourite choice for children and lovers of romantic art, literature and music.
